How to Dress Western with an Edgy Twist aka Y’allternative

August 2, 2021

I don’t know if I’m noticing western fashion more since I’ve moved to Texas or if it’s a thing all over, but I am certainly here for it. A lot of western and rock-n-roll fashion have some overlap, so this seemed like a natural progression for me and I wasn’t surprised when I found myself drawn to certain items. If you’re into the western look and want to add some pieces to your existing wardrobe, I’ve got you. You can find some staples that I’ve noticed in the trendy western fashion scene and they should easily go with some of your rocker-style pieces, too, to create a look TikTok has named Y’allternative.

Graphic Tees

You literally cannot go wrong with a graphic tee. In this case, lean towards tees with more western or country music vibes – think cacti, steer skulls, dessert, etc.

Flare / Bell-Bottom Jeans

Move over skinny jeans, as well as mom jeans! Big, bell-bottom flare jeans are super popular right now, too. Don’t be afraid of loud colors or prints either.

Turquoise Jewelry

Turquoise jewelry screams western vibes. I’ve noticed silver tends to be the more popular metal, but I’m still a bigger fan of gold.

Fringe

You might already have quite a bit of fringe already, too. Embrace it and keep using it for some western-inspired looks!

Wild Rags / Scarves

These are a staple in true western fashion, but they are very trendy in general right now. The headscarf look is super popular, but I’ve been really liking wearing it around your neck, too.

Bold Belts

Remember when we used to sling our belts around our hips and not necessarily through the belt loops? Grab a concho belt and do it again!

Boots + Booties

Obviously, pointed-toe cowboy boots will be the best choice, but you can still go for styles that are more edgy like completely silver cowboy boots or studded boots.

Faux Leather + Suede

Another staple that I gravitate towards and this style uses these fabrics quite a bit.

Cow Print

Another way western vibes is penetrating the mainstream right now is how popular cow print is, too. I already did a blog post on that, so go check that out for more details on that.
