Papa Emeritus, the enigmatic and theatrical frontman of the Swedish band Ghost, is not only recognized for his hauntingly melodic voice but also for his distinctive fashion sense. His style combines gothic and ecclesiastical elements to create a striking and mystifying look. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essentials of Papa Emeritus’ fashion and guide you on how to capture his iconic and enigmatic appearance.
Ghost is one of my all-time favorite bands, so you know I had to do a ‘Dress Like’ post on Papa Emeritus! There are lots of religious-influenced attire, especially during Papa I-III’s reigns, but Papa IV expanded his stage fashion the most. If you’re looking to dress like Papa Emeritus from the band Ghost, you’ll need to channel the band’s signature blend of gothic and theatrical style. Start with a black, ankle-length, flowing robe with wide sleeves and a hood. This is the centerpiece of the outfit, and you can find similar robes at costume shops or online retailers. Next, add a white, ruffled collar and cuffs to the robe, and wear black gloves to complete the look. For footwear, black boots with buckles or laces work well. Finish off the costume with the signature Papa Emeritus mask, which resembles a skull with black and white face paint and a tall, pointed hat. You can purchase a mask or make your own using paper-mâché or a similar material. Overall, the goal is to create a dark, regal look that exudes a sense of mystery and power, much like the enigmatic figure of Papa Emeritus himself.

Ghost recently announced their latest EP – Phantomime – will be out May 18, 2023, featuring five different covers: “See No Evil” by Television, “Jesus He Knows Me” by Genesis, “Hanging Around” by The Stranglers, “Phantom of the Opera” by Iron Maiden, and “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” by Tina Turner. Take a look at some Papa-inspired pieces below!
The Papal Attire
Papa Emeritus is often seen wearing papal-inspired garments, which play a central role in his stage persona. To emulate his look, invest in a long black cassock or robe with bell sleeves and intricate details. Look for pieces with a high, standing collar and embellishments that evoke a sense of religiosity.
Mitre Hat
The distinctive mitre hat is an essential accessory for capturing the Papa Emeritus style. Opt for a black mitre hat with ornate gold embroidery or details that add to the aura of spiritual authority.
Red Sash
A red sash with golden embroidery is another characteristic feature of Papa Emeritus’ attire. This sash is typically worn around the waist and serves as a bold contrast to the black cassock.
Rings and Accessories
Papa Emeritus is known for his flamboyant rings and accessories. Adorn your fingers with large, ornate rings, preferably featuring dark gemstones or religious motifs. Don’t forget to add a crucifix necklace to complete the look.
Black Boots
Papa Emeritus often completes his ensemble with a pair of tall black boots. Opt for knee-high or calf-length boots with minimal detailing, allowing the focus to remain on the rest of your attire.
Dark Makeup
Papa Emeritus’s makeup is a significant part of his style. Focus on dark, dramatic eye makeup with black eyeliner, bold mascara, and smoky eyeshadow. Pair this with a pale foundation and lipstick to create an ethereal and haunting appearance.
